Online Exhibition Origin

In part one of the program, Absolute Space for the Arts invited Thai curator Soifa Saenkhamkon and performing artist Peerapol Kijreunpiromsuk to visit Tainan for the purpose of resident research and inspection. Together with Taiwanese curator Chia-Nuan Chen, Saenkhamkon and Kijreunpiromsuk organized the part one of Taiwan-Thailand Residential Bilateral Exchange Exhibition, titled “You Exist, I Exist,” through which visitors were able to peep into the complicated political environment in Thailand through mainstream and alternative art developments.

Due to the pandemic, onsite transnational exchange was cancelled for the second part of the program. Instead, online exchange became the solution for connection with Cloud being the “place” for alternative interaction. Absolute Space invited Taiwanese curator Chia-Nuan Chen and artist Chen-Yen Yu to take on the role of online residents in part two of the program, and to execute the online exchange together with Thai curator Soifa Saenkhamkon and Tentacles Art Gallery.

During the process, Chen and Yu have tried to open conversations through social media including Facebook, Instagram and Gather Town. With the help from Thailand, art workers from various fields have joined the online exchanges and workshops, opening a wide range of dialogues in the program. A total number of 9 artists from Taiwan and Thailand have joined “Absence・Evidence— Taiwan-Thailand Residential Bilateral Exchange Exhibition- Part Two.” The exhibition intends to look at “absence” in a way that points out the causes, and its impacts on our understanding towards our surroundings.

Curator Chia-Nuan Chen believes that there are two causes of “absence.”  Sometimes an absence is caused by the degeneration of conscious activity, and yet other times powerful external forces that hold a fierce controlling desire to conceal and erase certain memories can also cause an absence. Therefore, the “absence” also symbolizes the wrestling of power. When we sense an absence being covered within the surrounding environment, we will start seeking and digging into the root cause for the absence, which is often far more thought-provoking than the actual surroundings, imprinting a much greater influence on the way we perceive the world.

At the same time, the exhibited artworks also reflect different aspects of absence. Besides political, natural, and religious environments, absences are also found within personal lives and memories. On the other hand, this exhibition also intends to respond to the absence of onsite visit under the pandemic. Although the “absence” seemed to have compressed the original exchange, the internet as the medium that links the actual and virtual, the present and the absent, has also created different possibilities for connection and reconstruction.

About Tentacles

Introduction

Tentacles was founded in 2014, with members from various creative backgrounds. We started off from a small corner of exhibition space in a shophouse, then to residency space in a garage and moving to our current space in 2016. Our main objective at the beginning was to provide opportunities for recent graduates and emerging artist to exhibit their works and expand their network, which slowly expanded into other activities. Currently, Tentacles is focused on being a platform for experimentation and collaboration through organising various events and projects, both locally and internationally. We emphasise on the concept of “platform” because it’s not always our members or staff who lead these projects. Often, we act as a connecting node between people in our local network and overseas organisations and practitioners, while we provide space and other supporting roles.

Workshops

With an aim to be self-sustainable and expand our audience to the wider public we also host diverse arts and crafts workshops, such as acrylic painting, niche perfume, Japanese dessert, embroidery, and ceramics that allow people to learn new skills, expand their creative minds and in many cases a starting point for a new hobby or business.

Other than the usual arts and craft workshop we also host more unusual and experimental workshops including Vogue dancing, Art Therapy, Rasa Body and Mind Awareness, Fish Sauce Tasting and History, Voice Training, Hemp Drinks and Cacao Ceremony for example. These more experimental workshops allow people with specific knowledge to have a platform to connect with more than their existing network and audience, allowing further proliferation of their network and know-how.

Collaboration and Exchange

Since 2014, we have expanded from our personal network of friends to a wide variety of collaboration with independent art spaces like us, as well as curators, artists and institutions This has allowed us to collaborate with them both as an organisation as well as for our individual practices. The collaboration happens in many forms including, artist exchange, exhibition, seminar, reading group, screening, talks, online events and projects.

Organisations we have worked with include the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre, in organising Silpyupen education programme for their Early Years Project for emerging artist and Spectro Dance Battle for Spectrosynthesis exhibition on Queer art. We have also worked with King Mongkut University of Technology Thonburi, Ratchaburi Campus to host K.Mutt artists’ community in their former campus building in the centre of Ratchaburi city, welcoming Thai and international artists for residency and exhibition.

Internationally, we had collaborations that allowed Thai artists and curators to work internationally in places such as Indonesia with Serum and Ace House collectives, Taiwan with Waley Art and Absolute Space for the Arts, South Korea with Open Bae and Sea Art Festival, Japan with Art Center Ongoing and Australia with TCB, Art Inc., and vice versa we have welcomed international practitioners to our space in Bangkok, facilitating connection between Thai and international art scenes.

Residency

Tentacles residency programme welcomes artists of all disciplines who are looking to develop their body of work, conduct research or experiment on new projects, and explore the diversity of Bangkok. We have welcomed artists and other creative practitioners from all over the world from Cambodia, South Korea, US to Argentina. At Tentacles, we provide the residency artist with a space in our shared studioin N22, allowing engagement with local artists and artistic community, with accommodation in Tentacles house. Our team assists and encourages the artists-in-residence to participate in local activities and learn about local context, to take the most advantage of their stay in Bangkok. Participating artists have the opportunity to host workshops, seminars, talks, or screenings in the space or work with Tentacles' members and community for their projects.

Our suggested duration of residency is between 2-3 months to allow participating artists time to familiarise themselves with the local context and experiment with their practice. Covid-19
