In an ordinary afternoon, I took a walk among the alleys with a friend. When we passed by a temple,  my friend pointed to a ditch and yelled, “This is a river!” What? The ditch is a river!?  There is a river in this city!? It was right there at the place I went by every single day!? The vanishing nature covered by mysterious infrastructures is now noted. I now feel the invisible river lying under the wiggling alleys, high and low terrain, traces of industries, religious culture, toponym, etc.

In a contemporary legend concerning Taiwan’s rivers, it is said that the vanished water hides in languages and the unseen landscapes. How does the water that sustains ecology, culture, and life hides itself in today’s modern society? With all the questions in mind, and a body that has disconnected itself with the natural surroundings, I crept into the hidden crevices of our urban and suburban area. Following the river, I went into places beyond the light.
