雙重滯後偶像速成計畫:一位台灣當代藝術家的舞蹈表演——本創作計畫包含一場線上工作坊及兩件錄像作品。

 

當被要求在 2019 年的電視節目「THE RAPPER 2」中展示舞蹈技巧時,泰國新星Milli 選擇美國歌手Cardi B的作品作為配樂。這對我來說是一個特別值得注意的場景,不僅因為現在女性歌手時常也需要扮演一名優秀的舞者,北美和各種強勢文化的影響,也在不到一分鐘的時間裡,通過表演者的身體和各種節目元素滲透到當代泰國媒體中。

 

這樣的現象在當代藝術領域裡也並不陌生,因此我特別希望作品發生的場域都能設定在當代藝術展場,也碰觸到大眾文化與美術館藝廊文化的界線。

 

對於「滯後」現象的一種理解,是後殖民文化論述中,敘述離開殖民體系後,諸如台灣、東南亞的我們在當代社會,相對於殖民母國及文化政治強權,仍然面臨的種種「累格」所帶來的挑戰與轉機。

 

雖然我以身為滯後並且還是非主流社群(東南亞/東亞血統、酷兒認同、朝不保夕的藝文工作者)的一員自豪,但我也一直非常著迷於主流流行文化。我不斷在創作過程中,通過敘事/實驗電影製作、表演、文學和藝術研究等多種方法探索酷兒群體,以及自身身份。

 

這次,特別因為個人缺乏專業表演藝術培訓的身體經驗,我反而打算盡最大努力學習與泰國駐村、合作對象討論後選定的偶像(電視劇集《轉學來的女生》主角「娜諾」、Tata Young、Milli、Blackpink的Lisa等等)的視覺與身體形象,旨在與我自己的台灣和國際混合生命經驗結合並發展成新作品。我預計會遭遇非常大的困難,因為我是一個肢體協調性極差的舞者,但這也正是這件作品的重點之一,這也是「滯後」的一個面向。

 

在整個計畫中,我想從全球歷史的角度來審視:當我將自己未受訓練的台灣身體屈服於像是泰國這樣,也同時強力受外力影響的當代流行文化勢力,營造出一種「雙重(甚至更多重)滯後」的狀態時,我是否真的有機會把握後殖民文化論述裡稱之為「滯後」的轉捩點,還是我終究只會成為一個笑話呢?

Belatedness star-making: a dance performance by the contemporary artist

 

When asked to showcase her dance skill in 2019 on the TV show THE RAPPER 2, rising Thai star Milli dances to a Cardi B track. This appeared as an especially notable scenario to me, not only because of the fact a female rapper/singer is generally required to be a good dancer to succeed as an entertainer nowadays, but also because of how the significant but different levels North American and other powerful forces seep through contemporary Thai media via the performer’s body and other elements of the TV show in less than a minute’s time.

 

While I am proudly a member of the non-mainstream community (Southeast/East Asian, queer, hustling in fine arts), I have always been fascinated by popular culture. I have explored the queer collective as well as my personal identity with a variety of approaches including narrative/experimental filmmaking, performance, literature and artistic research, etc.

 

This time, particularly due to my lack of professional training in performing arts, I plan to try my best to learn the looks, the moves, and the looks and the body images of selected Thai idols (“Nanno” from Netflix Series Girl from Nowhere, Tata Young, Milli, Lisa of Blackpink...), with the aim to combine and evolve with my own mixed Taiwanese AND international body and experience into something that I don’t know yet. I expect great difficulties since I am a horrible dancer, but that is exactly the point, another layer of the “belatedness”.

 

Throughout this project, I would like to examine from the perspective of global history: when I submit my body to a foreign power also majorly influenced and adapted from other hierarchical systems in contemporary popular culture, do I actually have a chance to grasp the so-called turning-point-opportunity of the cultural “belatedness”, namely the postcolonial lag in postcolonial cultural discourses, or do I risk becoming a trivial joke?
